Goals
Save-up goals with a target and date, pay-down goals with a payoff plan. Where contributions show in the budget and how status is judged.
Updated September 5, 2026 · 2 min read
Goals live under Plan › Goals and surface in the Budgets Savings & goals bucket as contribution rows. There are two kinds.
Save-up goals
A thing you are saving toward: an emergency fund, a trip, a repair, a down payment.
- Name, target, target date.
- Linked account(s): where the money lives. Progress is read from the real balance, not from what you meant to transfer.
- Planned monthly contribution: the row that appears in the budget.
Status compares the pace you need with the pace you planned. Target $3,000 by March 2027 at $200 a month with $10 saved needs $498 a month, so it shows At risk with the needed figure. Raise the contribution, move the date, or lower the target, and the status follows.
Pay-down goals
A debt you want gone: a card, a car loan, a personal loan.
- Linked debt from your accounts, with its APR and minimum.
- Planned monthly payment.
The goal shows the projected payoff month and interest saved against minimums. A $1,387 balance at 27.49% paid at $300 a month clears in 5 months with $96 of interest, against 113 months and $1,992 on minimums; the card shows the difference, $1,896.
The debt payoff planner under Net worth › Debts can create pay-down goals for you with Make this a goal, using the avalanche or snowball order and the extra amount you chose.
Contributions in the budget
Each goal's monthly figure is a row in Savings & goals. The row's actual is what really moved into the linked account that month, matched from transfers, so a goal's progress and the budget agree. The row is not editable in the grid; the goal owns its figure, so edit it on the goal.
Where the money comes from
The paycheck plan proposes contributions from what is left after bills and the buffer floor, as dated transfer instructions. You carry the transfer out at your bank and mark it done. Ample never moves money.
Migration from savings purposes
If you had savings accounts tagged with a purpose and target before goals existed (an emergency fund with a target, a fun fund), those became save-up goals automatically. Nothing was lost; the account, target and balance carried over.
Goals and the long-range plan
Contributions appear in Long-range as planned contributions each year, and a pay-down goal's payoff frees the payment into surplus in the year it ends. A save-up goal with a target date shows as a dot on the long-range chart.
